What is Chinese New Year?
Chinese New Year is the most important festival in the Chinese calendar. The new year starts on the first day of the Chinese calendar, usually in February, and celebrations run over 15 days. During this time people wear red, symbolising fire, which drives away evil. The Chinese New Year festival ends with a traditional lantern festival, where participants carry lanterns under the light of a full moon. The dragon dance is a highlight, symbolising power and dignity through the movement of a dragon stretching 30 metres long.
