Sydney Festival 2012

The Sydney Festival takes place each January and is a rich program of 80ish events showcasing local and international artists. With music, dance, theatre and family entertainment, Sydney Festival 2012 has something for everyone. Beginning on 7 January 2012 with Festival First Night, the Sydney Festival runs for 3 weeks and finishes on 29 January 2012.

Sydney Festival locations are varied, with 3 large outdoor concerts in The Domain, along with smaller scale events in Sydney’s streets and laneways. In addition to The Domain, the Sydney Festival utilises the city’s main theatre venues including Sydney Theatre, Carriageworks, City Recital Hall and Sydney Opera House. Hyde Park and many of Sydney’s coolest bars are also Sydney Festival venues.

Many Sydney restaurants participate in the Fast Festival Feasts program offering a range of specials to festivalgoers.

Sydney Festival First Night - 7 January 2012

Festival First Night kicks off the Sydney Festival with an extravaganza of free concerts, music, film, kids activities and more. Take the kids to Hyde Park for fun music, puppets and the interactive elastic-weaving Tangle, created live by children and their families.

For music lovers, 8 hours of music and dancing rock the park with DJ Norman Jay and the Domain features an exciting line up of local and international musicians including Gurrumul and Manu Chao.

Take a stroll to Elizabeth Street and dance the night away to the The Jolly Boys performing 40s and 50s jive and rock. Amazing visual and aerial performances can be seen on Macquarie and College Streets and the Art Gallery of NSW provides free music, film, art making and performances for the whole family.

Keystone Sydney Festival Bar - 8 to 28 January 2012

The Keystone Festival Bar is located at Hyde Park Barracks and is a favourite Summer venue for live music. A mixed line up of bands and DJs will be performing soul, Latin, house, hip-hop, indie rock, sultry singers and tribal beats.

Honda Sydney Festival Garden - 8 to 29 January 2012

One of the Sydney Festival’s most popular venues, Festival Garden in Hyde Park is the perfect setting for a balmy night of theatre and music. The Famous Spiegeltent is a mainstay of the Sydney Festival, offering magic shows for kids by day and live music and theatre by night. Have a laugh as the Bright Club provides excellent comic relief with some of the city’s finest minds and sit back and groove in style at Late at the Garden.

Carriageworks at Sydney Festival - 8 to 29 January 2012

The Carriageworks in Redfern presents Black Capital, a program of exhibitions and performances echoing the diversity of Aboriginal customs in contemporary times. The name Black Capital comes from the local name for Redfern, known as the ‘Black Capital of Australia’. A meeting place for Aboriginal Australians, the area has a thriving community and is home to artists and activists alike.

Sydney Festival Riverside Theatres - 13 to 22 January 2012

Parramatta’s Riverside Theatres offer 10 days of events including local and international artists delivering film, music and theatre performances. Many programs are free, with open air concerts and art installations in the streets.
