New Year’s Eve in Sydney is an exciting experience, including breathtaking fireworks on the Harbour featuring the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the centrepiece.

World renowned, Sydney’s New Year’s Eve celebrations have a broad appeal, offering something for adults, children and visitors.

The theme for 2011 New Year’s Eve is ‘Time to Dream’. You are invited to share your hopes and dreams for the year ahead, as you usher in a new year with a fun range of New Year’s activities kicking off at 6pm.

Sydney New Year’s Eve Fireworks

New Year’s Eve includes 2 main fireworks displays:

  • 9pm Family Fireworks - 8 minutes of dazzling colour designed especially for children.
  • Midnight Fireworks - lighting up the sky and celebrating the new year with an amazing display from multiple harbour locations.

Both fireworks displays are accompanied by music by Australian artists and soundtracks will be available after the event. For the first time a unique anthem has been created for the celebrations and proceeds from sales will go to CARE Australia. Download the New Year’s Eve Anthem ‘We are the Light’ from iTunes.

Sydney New Year’s Eve Fireworks Hotspots

There are numerous vantage points from which to view the fireworks, both in and out of the CBD. The closest sites attract large crowds, so you will need to arrive early as these sites are closed once they are at capacity. Vantage spots outside the CBD offer great views too, and can be more easily accessed.

Depending on the site, services available include food, first aid and toilet facilities. Alcohol will be on sale at some locations. Many sites have been designated alcohol free zones, so check out the New Year's Eve Vantage Points Listing to find out the restrictions at your preferred spot.

Not sure where to go for the best view? The New Year's Eve Vantage Points Interactive Map shows every site and also provides information about restrictions, parking, capacity and more.

Parking and Transport

Plan ahead if you’re going to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks or are heading into Sydney’s CBD. Using public transport is a must, as there are New Year's Eve road closures in many locations in the CBD, Harbour Foreshore and local Council areas.

Additional public transport services will be in operation on New Year’s Eve, however it’s advisable to allow extra travelling time, as some delays may be expected.

Local New Year’s Eve Fireworks

Many areas outside of Sydney’s CBD provide superb fireworks displays, without the congestion of the harbour activities. Check your local Council website to see what’s on in your area.
