We love Ricky Gervais but his movies don't always come together and this one in a similar way to Ghost Town failed to hit the funny mark.

The Invention of Lying is a comedy film directed by Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson, from their own script. The film is set on an alternate Earth where no one has ever lied, and stars Gervais as a performer who tells the world's first lie, coming to wield its power for personal gain. Gervais describes his character as someone who works in the film industry, where actors are really readers who tell completely factual stories...he's lumbering through the 1300s. All he's got to work with is the Black Death. But once he lies and pretends he's found lost stories, he becomes the greatest storyteller in the world.

* Cast: Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman, Ricky Gervais, Patrick Stewart, Rob Lowe, Christopher Guest, Jeffrey Tambor, Stephanie March, Jimmi Simpson, Louis C.K., Fionnula Flanagan, Stephen Merchant, Nathan Corddry, Dreama Walker, John Hodgman, Bobby Moynihan

The concept of The Invention of Lying is a completely fresh and new way to look of the way we operate as humans, which does lead to a number of funny/embarrassing moments as people walk around telling the truth. This movie however walks the fine line of a comedy and a romantic comedy and just ends up being so unrealistic and cheesey that you sort of feel uncomfortable watching it. Tina Fey is a one of our favourites from 30 Rock and one of the reasons we also rented the DVD but she has a cameo role.
